“Lord, you have been our dwelling place in
all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had
formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are
God.”
Psalm 90.1-2
“Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.” The notion of
‘home’ is powerful in my heart. ‘Home’ is the dwelling of family and has
less to do with a geographic location than with the people with whom we
share the journey. ‘Home’ is that accumulation of ‘kingdom glimpses’ with
which we are blessed: those moments when we inherently perceive safety,
plenty enough of everything, love, laughter, music, wonderful smells and
even more beautiful sights. ‘Home’ is that time of oneness with the One
who dwells with all, that One who knew us before we were, loves us as we
are, and will continue to claim us after we have been. ‘Home’ is that
towards which we journey, each of us in our own way, each with our own
perceptions, each with our own expectations. ‘Home’ is completely, fully,
wholly, God’s, and God is our dwelling place in all generations.
The faith family of St. Paul United Church of Christ has
become ‘home’ for me, and I say ‘has become’ because it is a notion that
doesn’t just happen: the sense of ‘home’ makes itself known through time,
experience and wisdom. It is a realization that occurs and reoccurs, much
like the receiving of gifts which are completely unexpected.
